The Biography of Anthony Lau

Anthony Lau began to play the harmonica at the age of ten. Influenced by Larry Adler and Lau Mok, he started to play the chromatic harmonica, an excellent instrument for playing classical music. He has been an elite member of the Chinese YMCA Harmonica Orchestra since 1956. Apart from holding recitals, he gave lessons and organized harmonica bands there.

 In 1985, he moved to Canada and has involved in performing and teaching through out the province of British Columbia. He is currently a classical harmonica teacher at the Tom Lee Academy of Music, Vancouver, B.C.

 He is considered as one of the masters in Hong Kong. With hard work and experiments to articulate the sound of the harmonica, he has developed the mellow tone and natural vibrato that are considered unique by his peers. Anthony thinks that chromatic harmonica has been under-rated as a serious concert instrument. That is why he has a life long devotion to promote the art of classical harmonica playing with the hope that the music world and the public in general recognize and appreciate its versatility and beauty as it stands along side with other instruments such as the oboe, flute, clarinet and the violin.
